What's the most universal experience for teenagers? Coming of age. That's the energy Teenage Joans had in their sights when they stepped into the Like A Version studio to take on a 2012 pop sensation.
The ideal song to soundtrack that moment? It's gotta be Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe'.
And that's exactly what the Adelaide pop-punk duo took on.
"'Call Me Maybe' was the song of our childhood, I guess," guitarist Cahli Blakers said.
"I remember it at like my Year Seven disco. I dunno, we just thought it'd be a cool one to do considering it's a pop song, it's very different to our genre. Everyone knows 'Call Me Maybe'! Like if you don't know 'Call Me Maybe', where have you been living?"
While taking on a song from the peak of an iconic era of pop music could have been a daunting task for the duo, they knew that pushing it more into that coming-of-age movie sound was the way to go.
And in a real blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, Teenage Joans also weaved in a bit of Maroon 5's hit 'Payphone' - which also came out in 2012. A real wildcard entry, there.
It really was an interesting time for the pop music world, which was in the process of shifting away from the saccharine hyper-produced collectives and solo stars of the 90s to a more complex and (dare we say it) respected genre.
Honouring their own coming of age moments with their debut in the Like A Version studio, Teenage Joans really captured the essence of the adolescent experience. It's certainly a cover we'd sprint to our crush in the rain to, that's for sure.
