triple j's FAVOURITE ALBUMS OF THE YEAR

Richard Kingsmill (triple j Music Director & Presenter 2005)
| 1 |
The Panics
Sleeps Like A Curse |
Great songwriting, great performances, and an album i'm never going to get sick of. |
| 2 |
The Arcade Fire
Funeral |
I wish they'd bloody hurry up and tour here! It's a rock record that reveals something new with each listen. |
| 3 |
Gorillaz
Demon Days |
A commercial and artistic success. It has hits, but it's also a complete album. |
| 4 |
Wolfmother
Wolfmother |
Exciting, fun, dumb and smart all at once. A blast! |
| 5 |
Kanye West
Late Registration |
Hip hop record of the year. Hands down. As opposed to in the air. |
| 6 |
Dungen
Ta Det Lugnt |
A record for space cadets. Retro and futuristic at once. |
| 7 |
The White Stripes
Get Behind Me Satan |
They can't do much wrong at the moment. |
| 8 |
The Beautiful Girls
We're Already Gone |
I love to combination of influences and the way each song unfolds. |
| 9 |
Franz Ferdinand
You Could Have It So Much Better |
It channels The Beatles in a very 2005 way. |
| 10 |
Jaga Jazzist
What We Must |
A headphone record. And a holiday record. |

Rosie Beaton (Super Request)
| 1 |
Cog
The New Normal |
An absolutely brilliant CD. All the tracks are strong and I listen loud, always. |
| 2 |
Xavier Rudd
Food In The Belly |
Totally getting into this, nice and chilled. Great lyrics - I was surprised. |
| 3 |
Elbow
Leaders of the Free World |
From the first track, 'Station Approach' you are totally hooked. I have listened to it 100 times. |
| 4 |
Shout Out Louds
Howl Howl Gaff Gaff
|
I'm always singing, "I wanna live!". |
| 5 |
System Of A Down
Mesmerize |
I just keep falling in love with the output of these guys. Looking forward to Hypnotise . |
| 6 |
Martha Wainwright
Martha Wainwright |
Good angry women's music. |
| 7 |
Coco Rosie
Noah's Ark |
Underrated sisters, where some tunes sound like they are scraping a steel rod over cement. They experiment with some freaky samples. |
| 8 |
Faker
Addicted Romantic |
Nathan sounds like he's singing with a fake Pommie accent, but live these guys are amazing. |
| 9 |
Unkle Ho
Roads To Roma |
Just back announcing Unkle Ho was fun this year. Really great world sounds mixed with hip hop. |
| 10 |
QOTSA
Lullablies to Paralyse |
Rock on! Farkin' awesome CD. Once again, every track rocks out no one is weaker than another. |

Robbie Buck (Home and Hosed)
| 1 |
Gyroscope
Are You Involved |
| 2 |
The Panics
Sleeps Like A Curse |
| 3 |
Clare Bowditch & The Feeding Set
What Was Left |
| 4 |
Hermitude
Tales Of The Drift |
| 5 |
Wolfmother
Wolfmother |
| 6 |
Faker
Addicted Romantic |
| 7 |

Get Behind Me Satan |
| 8 |
The Drones

| 9 |
Cog
The New Normal |
| 10 |
The Go-Betweens
Here Comes A City |

Mel Bampton (Mel in the Morning)
| 1 |
Cog
The New Normal |
Go you fantastic bunch of Aussies, finally getting the quality of production and the recognition that their talent deserves. |
| 2 |
The Herd
The Sun Never Sets |
Set to be my favourite summer album, a band with something really special going on. |
| 3 |
Kanye West
Late Registration |
This album would make it in for Golddigger alone, the way Kanye makes that effortless "uuuh" sound, brilliant. |
| 4 |
Gorillaz
Demon Days |
Bloody Damon Albarn. How can such a seemingly dull and flaccid man create such an energised and interesting project? He chooses the perfect people on every track. |
| 5 |
Z-Trip
Shifting Gears |
Another album where guest selection is genius. Whipper Whip - what a legend! |
| 6 |
QOTSA
Lullabies To Paralyze |
Well, you expected it didn't you? |
| 7 |
Wolfmother
Wolfmother |
When I first heard Wolfmother I remarked, "I already own Sabbath's Paranoid , I don't need Wolfmother." Well, I would like to back peddle and retract. These three have become very solid, the songs huge and the production perfect. Tough, massive, trippy...noice. |
| 8 |
Various
Like A Version |
It wouldn't make any sense if it wasn't in my top ten, now would it? |
| 9 |
System Of A Down
Mesmerize |
Bloody hell! This CD is so over the top, that if they didn't do it so fucking well it would be hilarious. (OK, maybe it's hilarious anyway.) |
| 10 |
Roisin Murphy
Ruby Blue |
This pick is based purely on the sound' of the year, which is the crazy beat to the track "Ramalama (Bang Bang)". |

The Doctor (Jay & The Doctor)
| 1 |
The Drones
Wait Long By The River... |
Not only by far the best album name of 2005, also reponsible for bringing back the bile to rock n roll. Songs to sneer at people by. Out with the love, in with the hate! |

Jay (Jay & The Doctor)
| 1 |
Peabody
The New Violence |
The thoughest album from the campest men. |

Kirileigh Lynch (Library Spice, triple j's Assistant Music Director)
in alphabetical order
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead
Worlds Apart |
The opening track on this album chews me up then spits me out every time. In a nice way. |
Danger Doom
|
One of the 2 cartoon influenced (toon-hop) albums dangermouse has leant his genius to this year. The man's a genius. A mad mad genius. |
Bright Eyes
I'm Wide Awake It's Morning |
Conor Oberst is my late night love doctor. |
Gorillaz
Demon Days
|
How can a bunch of cartoon characters whose leader was heavily to blame for Britpop make such awesome hip hop? That's not actually a rhetorical question. I really wanna know. |
Gyroscope
Are You Involved |
They rock. They're from Perth. And they make my tummy go rumbly. |
The Panics
Sleeps Like A Curse |
Every time I listen to this album it makes me feel like I'm dreaming the most beautiful dreams while being wide awake. |
Rilo Kiley
Take Offs And Landings |
Their 2001 album finally released locally. All I listened to for most of June and July. |
Sufjan Stevens
Illinois |
Apparently Sufjan is making a conceptual album for every state of the US on which he'll write and play up to 20 instruments himself. Sounds like a shit idea doesn't? It's not volume 1 ( Michigan ) was awesome and this volume can be filed under "life changing". |
The White Stripes
Get Behind Me Satan |
So Jack dresses a little funny these days and has a scary moustache and wrote a Coke commercial, but when he's writing music this good, like I care. |
Wolfmother
Wolfmother |
Time to party like it's 1973. Plus they have the best hair in modern music. Actually I think they take that title in the ancient music category as well. |

Costa Zouliou (Weekend Breakfasts)
| 1 |
System Of A Down
Mesmerize
|
Spent the most time in my CD player this year. Who else can insert a polka in the middle of a metal song and it not sound absurd, or maybe it did. |
| 2 |
Cog
The New Normal |
It was a near thing with my neighbours becoming intimate with the Bondi boys as well. Takes you through every emotion and back again.
|
| 3 |
The Panics
Sleeps Like A Curse |
Beautiful melodies and lyrics that force you to listen.
|
| 4 |
Queens of the Stone Age
Lullabies to Paralyze
|
Of course.
|
| 5 |

A double dose of delirium. Why can't this happen every year? |
| 6 |

Proof that dire situations provide inspired music. |
| 7 |
The Mars Volta
Frances The Mute |
The world needs more chaos. Can't wait to see them live again. |
| 8 |
The Go Betweens
Oceans Apart
|
25 years in the biz and they still managed to create one of the best albums of their career and the year. Never sounded better live.
|
| 9 |
Bloc Party
Silent Alarm
|
Best of the new breed of UK upstarts. Brilliant drummer. |
| 10 |
The Drones
Wait Long By The River and The Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By |
Nearly didn't get in because the title was too long for me to type. Lucky it's a great record and definitely one to listen to late at night. Blues for the new millennium.
|

Stu Harvey (Short. Fast. Loud)
| 1 |
The Evens
The Evens |
Punk rock icon Ian Mackaye turns his hand to the world of two-piece rock. Teaming up with fellow Washington DC punk rock alumni Amy Farina to produce 12 tracks of enchanting infectious rock. |
| 2 |
Against Me!
Searching For A Former Clarity |
Punk rock anthems that make you want to get off your ass and go to a show, punch your fist in the air, shout a long, dance and have a good time. You gotta love Against Me! |
| 3 |
Some Girls
The DNA Will Have It's Say |
These guys blew my head off live. Minute-long bursts of anger and chaos! Short, fast and very loud. Debut album in 2006 BRING IT ON! |
| 4 |
Latterman
No Matter Where We Go...! |
I just got this album last week and have not stopped listening to it. Reminds me of early Hot Water Music meets Strike Anywhere, with a splash of Against Me and Pegboy. |
| 5 |
Horsell Common
Lost A Lot Of Blood |
I think 'Sentenced' from this EP would be my favourite track of 2005. Great songwriters, excellent live band Lost A Lot Of Blood was voted #1 by SFL listeners as their favourite release mid way through the year. |
| 6 |
Coheed & Cambria, Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV
Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness |
Prog rock for punk kids. This is an epic album of lush sounds provided by amazing musicians recommended for punters with an open mind to their punk sounds looking for something truly unique. |
| 7 |
Propagandhi
Potemkin City Limits |
Over four years in the making, the politically correct for Winnipeg Canada make the wait worthwhile. Potemkin City Limits is another classic. |
| 8 |
Paint It Black
Paradise |
Fans of old school US hardcore like Black Flag and Bad Brains need this album. Intense anger hardcore. Perfect driving music actually. |
| 9 |
The Dead Walk
The Dead Walk EP |
Something of a Newcastle hardcore (NCHC) supergroup, featuring ex-members of Life Love Regret, FMD, Arms Reach among others. Angry sing-a-long hardcore, I love it. Since I got this EP I have put a track on every mixed CD I have made this year. |
| 10 |
The Disables
Nuthin' For No One |
Great Brisbane street punk with not a fringe or eyeliner in sight. Catchy as hell songs that live up to the high standards they set with earlier releases. |

| 1 |
Dungen
Ta Det Lugnt |
The best 2005 album you haven't heard yet. Swedish prog rock brilliance. Let it change the way you listen to music like it did to me. |
| 2 |
Black Mountain
Black Mountain
|
A bit heavy, a bit loose, a very very cool album from these Canadian freaks. |
| 3 |
Bloc Party
Silent Alarm |
Outstanding album, certainly the best of the recent Gang Of Four revivalists. Sweet hooks, amazing drumming, great live show. |
| 4 |
Daniel Johnson Discovered Uncovered |
It's a compilation and a tribute album all in one. And it reminds you that the best songwriting comes from all the places you'd never, ever look. |
| 5 |
The Drones
Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of You Enemies Will Float By |
The scariest Australian record in years. |
| 6 |
Edan
Beauty & the Beat |
A lo-fi hip hop album that is so expressive and creative, I can hear the colours |
| 7 |
LCD Soundsystem
LCD Soundsystem |
James Murphy has got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell! |
| 8 |
Wolfmother
Wolfmother |
Silencing all the non-believers with one self-titled behemoth of a rock record. Fulfilling all their potential and promising so much more at the same time.
|
| 9 |
Sufjan Stevens
Illinois |
Just beautiful and uplifting. Not bad for Christian pop, huh? |
| 10 |
Art Brut
Bang Bang Rock & Roll
|
Brilliant pretentious punked up rock and roll. Stay off the crack.
|

Craig Schuftan (Schuf's Mixed Tape & Culture Club)
| 1 |
Danger Doom
The Mouse & The Mask |
Conceptual continuity runs riot as Doom's misunderstood super villain hijacks the Space Ghost Talkshow. |
| 2 |
Doctor Who at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop
The Early Years |
1960s Backroom boffins invent the sound of the next 40 years of pop music using nothing but a razor blade and a wobbulator. |
| 3 |
The Chemical Brothers
Push The Button |
The Brothers almost supernatural grasp of dancefloor dynamics yields their best album ever. (Yes, I did say that about the last one too.) |
| 4 |
Tex Don & Charlie
All Is Forgiven |
The best Australian film of the year isn't a film at all. |
| 5 |
Magnetophone
The Man Who Ate The Man |
Broken machines and half remembered songs, with each idea given exactly the time it needs to develop; no more, no less. |
| 6 |
The Dandy Warhols Odditorium Or The Warlords Of Mars |
The Dandys leave behind the spit and polish of Welcome To The Monkey House for a good old-fashioned freakout. |
| 7 |
Black Dice
Creature Comforts |
What on first hearing barely sounds like music at all slowly reveals itself to be a twitchy masterpiece of electronic sound. |
| 8 |
Elvis Presley
The 68 Comeback Special (DVD) |
The King gives the performance of a lifetime as he takes the stage with a small combo (in a boxing ring, no less!) to show the world that he can rock with the best of them. |
| 9 |
Gorillaz
Demon Days |
Streets ahead of the debut album, Demon Days takes us on a tour of a blighted landscape populated by evil droids, possessed monkeys and Shaun Ryder. |
| 10 |
The Juan Mclean
Less Than Human |
More twisted disco from the DFA hit factory. |

Scott 'Dools' Dooley
| 1 |
Die! Die! Die!
Die! Die! Die! (EP) |
Exciting math rock from New Zealand.
Add the fact that the entire band look like they're twelve year olds, and
it's love.
|
| 2 |
Kanye West
Late Registration |
Beats, accusations and Ray Charles. Tops. |
| 3 |
Fiona Apple
Extraordinary Machine |
I love Fiona Apple. This record is
great, it will sell multi-million copies but still most people will have never heard a song from this album and refer to Fiona as the thin chick from the Calvin Klein ads. Idiots. |
| 4 |
Bloc Party
Silent Alarm |
So F***ing Useless!!
|
| 5 |
Mars Volta
Frances The Mute |
The best self idulgent prog rock since Can
went into a German Earls house.
|
| 6 |
Pegz
Axis |
You ain't f***in' wit Pegz. Best local Hip-Hop release since The Calling. |
| 7 |
Sufjan Stevens I
llinoise |
Beautiful. And it's a concept record. Sweet.
|
| 8 |
Decemberists
Picaresque |
They remind me of They Might Be Giants, for some
reason. Oh that's right, they're wordy white Americans.
|
| 9 |
Shout Out Louds
Howl Howl Gaff Gaff |
Sweden is the new Perth in terms of exciting bands that you've never heard of. Shout Out Louds are one such band. Good name too.
|
| 10 |
And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead Worlds Apart |
I really like it, apparently they've even stopped smashing stages apart when they play live.
So serious.
|

Dan Buhagiar (Senior Music Producer)
| Bloc Party
Silent Alarm |
It's fun. You can dance to it. And the Silent Alarm re-mix album released towards the end of the year was quite good too. |
Sigur Ros
Takk |
This record is my aural amphetamine always guaranteed to give a high. And like all amphetamines, it goes damn well with water. Perfect for sitting on a beach, strolling beside a lake or dozing in the bath. I'm yet to try it with hard frosty type of H2O native to Iceland, Sigur Ros's homeland. But I suspect that a scotch and dry tipped over a couple of blocks of the stuff would go quite nicely too. |
The Arcade Fire
Funeral |
It took me a while to learn to like the vocals on this album. But now it's a well loved friend. Comforting, full of great stories and always good for late night company. |
Pivot
Make Me Love You
|
A fantastic album from a Sydney based instrumental five piece more than worth the four year wait the band put us through to get it. Each track takes you on an amazing journey full of dynamic changes, subtle moods and brilliant technique. |
| Shout Out Louds
Howl Howl Gaff Gaff |
How many good albums came from the Scandinavian nations this year? Here's another. The Shout Out Louds are four boys and one girl from Stockholm, Sweden. The gave us eleven pop tracks that range from cutely upbeat to cutely mid-paced to cutely melancholic. |
M.I.A.
Arular |
It's like the soundtrack to a bollywood musical set in south London and starring Missy Elliot. This debut album slapped me in the face and knocked me right over. I staggered back to my feet and wished I could make them move the way those bhangra beats were begging them to
. |
Emiliana Torrini
Fisherman's Woman
Jose Gonzalez
Veneer |
These two albums are together not because they don't stand up on their own - but because they just seem to go hand in hand. They come from similar places both in terms of sound and geography - but at the same time they've satisfied polar opposite ends of my emotional spectrum.
Emiliana Torrini one of those rare artists who writes and performs music filled with joy that doesn't sound lame. Even the sad songs have a little glimmer of smile-ability. Her performance at Sydney's Metro Theatre was definitely was possibly the best live show I saw this year.
Jose Gonzalez on the other hand finds beauty in tragedy. The music is darkly brooding but fragile. The guitar playing that draws on spanish flamenco and the vocals are amazingly honest and sensitive. A man who's not afraid to lay his soul bare. |
The Go! Team
Thunder, Lightening, Strike |
This album confirmed that an insatiable love of Motown doesn't have to be uncool |
| Dirty Three
Cinder |
Another instantly-classic Australian instrumental album. Well, almost. On their seventh studio album The Dirty Three added vocals to the mix with guests Chan Marshall (Cat Power) and Sally Timms (the Mekons). It adds another dimension to the captivating moodscapes from the trio. |
| Sons And Daughters
The Repulsion Box |
It's angry and it's sexy. Like a destructive relationship you just can't leave coz the making up makes all the tears worthwhile. Gee I'd like to see behind the scenes band dynamics of these Glaswegians! |
Highly commended: End Of Fashion, Surfjan Stevens, Maximo Park, Mountain Goats
Most overrated release of 2005: Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better If only it had been a little bit better. The Ferdipants gave us a sophomore release that was fine, but I wanted something amazingly brilliantly special! On the first record and in subsequent interviews Alex Kapranos wooed me with his humble charm and those considered responses smattered with cheeky wit. But this album felt too clever, too thought out and too aware that the whole world was waiting with baited breath for its release.

Alicia Brown (Jay & The Doctor Producer)
Most over-analysed release of 2005: Wolfmother - Wolfmother Stop over-analysing and enjoy! Yes,it's derivative, but it's also distinctive. There are the playful vocals on 'Apple Tree' where Stockdale sounds like he's hanging onto the edge of a cliff using nothing but his vocal chords. And cross-breeding Devendra Banhart's quavering moan with their brand of epic rock on 'Where Eagles Have Been' is an innovation of a kind. Like Jet before them, Wolfmother stand accused of being copycats. But apart from 'Minds Eye' (which is virtually a steal of Russell Morris' 'The Real Thing') I don't care, I don't feel dirty! (at least not in a bad way). And besides, their energy alone will let a whole new generation understand what was so exciting about rock 'n' roll in the first place.

Illegal Del (Today Today Producer)
| 1 |
Bloc Party
Silent Alarm
|
Great production, great hooks, political agendas, the best new drummer around and the best opening minute to any album of the year by a mile. |
| 2 |
The Kaiser Chiefs
Employment
|
There are so many good songs on this album and they are all such fun. No bullshit bouncy pop rock - love it!
|
| 3 |
The Panics
Sleeps Like A Curse
|
This is the best Australian album of the year. |
| 4 |
Gyroscope
Are You Involved?
|
I love driving around posh neighbourhoods blasting out Fast Girl - yup, I'm a sad f#*ker. |
| 5 |
Lior
Autumn Flow
|
This makes the top five because all of my friends, ALL of them - from mums and Emo freaks to snobby radio types and hip hop peeps, have this album or at least know two of the songs. |
| 6 |
Antony & The Johnsons
I Am A Bird Now |
The most original voice in years, I love the lyrical content and Boy George.
|
| 7 |
The Presets
Beams |
A great album with great production and some brilliant hooks. |
| 8 |
Coldplay
X&Y |
Everyone hates this MOR bo**ocks but I love it. I love Chris Martin and want to fondle him.
|
| 9 |
Hot Hot Heat
Elevator |
Great pop album. Made the top ten because when I saw them live the drummer jumped into the crowd mid song to give some dude a slap after he elbowed a girl in the front row. |
| 10 |
Bernard Fanning
Tea & Sympathy
|
I think Bernard has such a distinctive voice and really like his lyrics. Songbird is a great song too. |

Bonez (triple j Designer / Marketing)
| 1 |
The Arcade Fire
Funeral |
Easliy the best album of the year. |
| 2 |

Easliy the 2nd best album of the year. |

| 2 |
The Herd The Sun Never Sets |
I'm a big fan and I reckon this is their best album yet. OK, I'm a gushing idiot, but Ozi Batla's and Urthboy's voices are hot hot hot! |
| 3 |
Datarock
Datarock |
It's a fun, sing along, summery kind of vibe and the singer makes me smile. |
| 4 |
M.I.A
arular |
I just discovered MIA this year and just like Lady Sovereign, she's really electric and awesome when you're in the car and up for some eratic chair dancing. |
| 5 |
Gyroscope
Are You Involved? |
A surprise one for me, I reckon this album rocks along really nicely. |
| 6 |
Hanne Huckleberg
Little Things |
Heard Richard Kingsmill play Hanne Huckleberg on 2005 and loved it right away. She uses everyday objects as instruments and it can get pretty kooky, but her appeal isn't novelty value, she creates a really nice feeling in her songs and I love her voice. |
| 7 |
Pivot
Make Me Love You |
Another one that's new to me this year and it is totally up my alley, takes me to a good place and makes me feel lucid. |
| 8 |
The Mars Volta
Frances The Mute |
I reckon you really need to listen to this whole album at the one time. A long car trip at night would be good. |
| 9 |
Gorillaz
Demon Days |
It's energetic and fun. Why not? |
| 10 |
Sigur Ros
takk |
I feel like I SHOULD love this, but it's here mostly for my cats (artreyu and biaggi) who seem to understand Sigur Ros at a deeper level than myself. It's cat music, for sure. |
|
